A New Standard – H.265

VCEG Main Focus Areas

Short-Term Focus:
  • H.264 Extensions – Introducing new scalability Profiles: Spatial, Temporal, ROI, color depth, complexity (Fast Profile) etc,.
  • Trying to improve coding efficiency of certain profiles further
Long-Term Focus (>5 Years):
  • Development of a new Standard based on the basics of compression technology: H.265

GOALS:
  • 2x Improvement (Hard work) of Coding
  • Gain (i.e) same quality at half the bit-rate.
  • - Better Prediction (Temp Redundancy)
  • - Better coding of prediction Error
  • - Better Entropy coding
  • Minimization of Computational complexity – Encoder & Decoder

Tandberg is looking at these proposals
Scalability – Temporal/Spatial/FGS
Assumed No Backward / Forward
Compatibility with earlier standards
Improved error-resilience, especially due to packet loss in IP networks
Simple ways of combining outputs ofseveral streams into a single display.

H.265 – Technology Contenders
  •  Introduction of Wavelets in video coding
  •  New ways of distributed source video coding.
  •  Intelligent decoders & encoder – Computer Vision tools
  •  Development of new transforms
  •  New scalability schemes.
  •  Switch to progressive (no interlaced) only tools.
  •  Better Data-partitioning and Error-concealment techniques.
